New York (AP) A record number of schools across the United States have opened for enrollment, including some that hadn’t before.
More than 1,500 students, mostly from lower-income families, will enroll at more than 20,000 schools this fall in the United School Districts.
Many of the schools have been waiting for a grant or other aid from the state since the recession ended in 2009.
Students are taking a hard look at their future in a city that was the most economically distressed in the nation in the early 1990s, when poverty rates spiked.
Now, many students are looking ahead to a brighter future.
Here are some of the new schools to open this fall:•Chattanooga Public Schools: More than 2,000 students from low-income households will enroll in the new district in Chattanooga.
Chattahoochee Schools: About 1,000 high school students will enroll this fall at the new high school in Chattanooga, where a majority of the students are low- and middle-income.•Crowne Plaza Community College: About 2,400 students will graduate from Crowne Plaza High School in downtown Memphis, which was the last high school to open in the state in 2009, after the state began giving its school funding.•Westlake School: About 400 students will receive their high school diplomas in 2018 at Westlake High School, where nearly 80 percent of students are high school graduates.•Pierce County Community College District: About 750 students will be attending Pierce County Community Colleges in 2019, with nearly 90 percent of the class earning at least a bachelor’s degree.•North Carolina Technical College: More students will attend North Carolina Technical Colleges (NTCCs) in 2019 at about 400 schools in Charlotte, Raleigh and Winston-Salem.
Students from the Northern Kentucky Community College System (NCLCS) will graduate with a bachelor of science degree in 2019.
Students at the University of Cincinnati will graduate next fall with a master of science in 2019 with a major in biology.
Students in the Cincinnati Public Schools and NCLCS will graduate in 2020 with a degree in science.
Students will take classes at University of Southern California in 2019 and the University at Buffalo in 2020.
The University of Memphis will open a new campus for the 2020-2022 school year.
Students enrolled at Northern Kentucky College will graduate this fall with an associate of arts degree in the 2019-2020 school year with a minor in the social sciences.
Students attending the University’s flagship campus in Memphis will graduate after the 2020 school year, with a graduate degree in 2020, 2019 or 2018.
Students studying for a master’s degree in neuroscience at Southern Methodist University in Dallas will graduate the following year.
At least 1,700 students will take graduate courses at University at Charlotte.
Students working on a degree or certificate at the prestigious University of Chicago will graduate and be eligible for a bachelor in science degree.
Students who are pursuing a master degree in engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette will be awarded a bachelor degree in 2018.
The first of the state’s colleges to open for summer school is the University Park Community College in Ohio.
The university is planning to open a summer school starting in 2019 for students in grades 9 through 12.
Students taking classes at the Cleveland Community College of Ohio will be able to finish their degree in four years.
Students can also finish a bachelor or master’s in engineering degree in college, which will allow them to work in the field of engineering or design.
The city of Columbus opened two campuses for summer classes.
The school at East Cleveland will open in fall 2019 and a school at Cleveland State will open this year.
Columbus’ new university, Columbus State University, will open as a summer college.
The Ohio Department of Education will offer the first summer courses at the school, which is set to begin in 2020 and be open from June through December.
Students earning bachelor’s degrees will also be able take advanced courses that will prepare them for jobs in engineering and other fields.
The state of New York opened up its first summer school for students from New York City.
Students on New York’s Upper West Side will begin classes at New York State College of Staten Island in 2019 in the hopes of gaining a bachelor level degree in electrical engineering.
Students may enroll in one of the city’s two public high schools in 2019 or 2020.
Students with an engineering degree can enroll at the New York Polytechnic Institute, the state college of Staten island or at Brooklyn Technical College, the school in Brooklyn.
Students completing a master in engineering program can enroll in New York Technical College or at Cornell University, which offers a master-level engineering program.
Students entering the 2019 college of education will take two electives in engineering or computer science.
The 2019 college will have the largest freshman class in the country and the largest enrollment of freshmen ever, according to the state department of education.
Students graduating in 2019 will be eligible to attend a graduate college in the fall of 2020.
